The Actress States Discussing Donald Trump Would ‘Intensify Divisions’ Dividing the Country Apart
The star has revealed that she finds it inappropriate fitting to comment publicly regarding the Trump administration, worried it could worsen divisive discussions and increase separation across the country.
‘I Don’t Really Know If I Should’, Explains Jennifer Lawrence
In a recent interview, the Oscar winner commented, “When Trump was first in office, I believed I was running around like a chicken with my head cut off. But it’s become clear, election after election, public figures fail to influence in any way on voter decisions.”
Lawrence added, “So then what am I doing? I’m just sharing my opinion on something that’s going to heighten conflict dividing the nation apart.”
Shifting Views
The actress has previously been open about voting for both conservative and liberal presidential nominees throughout her life. Raised by a right-leaning family in Kentucky, she cast her ballot for John McCain in the 2008 election before joining the Democratic party and explaining she realized during Obama’s administration that voting Republican was opposing her individual liberties as a female citizen.
Past Statements
Earlier in her career, she stated that Donald Trump’s election could represent “a catastrophic event” and endorsed the Democratic candidate in the 2020 presidential race. In the latest campaign, she lent her support to the Democratic nominee, “because I believe she’s an excellent choice and I am confident that she will do whatever she can to protect women’s health rights.”
Hollywood’s Stance
Jennifer Lawrence was aligned with many in the entertainment industry in her rejection of the former president as a candidate for re-election, but the limited influence public figures have over the voting intentions was highlighted by his election win.
“The second term seems distinct,” noted she about his leadership. “Since he made his plans clear. We understood his record for four years. He was very clear. And that’s what we chose.”
Current Projects
Lawrence is discussing her new film, Lynne Ramsay’s drama in which she plays a young mom who struggles with her mental health in the countryside. At a media event for the movie in Venice, Lawrence spoke about Israel’s bombings in Gaza: “I’m terrified. It’s mortifying. What’s happening is equivalent to a humanitarian crisis and it’s horrible.”
Broader Concerns
She continued by saying that she was saddened by “the disrespect in the discussions of U.S. political debates right now and how that is going to be commonplace to the children right now. It’s going to be normal to them that politicians lie.”
The actor aimed to shift outrage about the situation to decision-makers rather than entertainers. “Keep attention on the people in charge,” she remarked, in what many took to be a allusion to the then-recent pledge supported by thousands of arts community members to boycott certain cultural organizations.
Individual Insights
The actor, who received an Academy Award at a young age for her performance in the acclaimed film, is receiving praise for her portrayal in her latest project. While Lynne Ramsay has denied the story being seen as one of post-birth struggles and psychosis, the actress shared that she identified with parts of her character’s journey after the delivery of her youngest child, soon after filming concluded.
“It was fear about my child,” she explained, “envisioning every worst-case scenario, and then doubting everything that I was trying. I was receiving counseling, but I began using a drug called the prescription and I continued it for a short period and it was effective.”
Professional Experiences
The actor also spoke about the empowering aspect of shooting revealing sequences in the film while she was expecting and couldn’t work out.
“There’s a freedom,” she said, of being forced to set aside self-consciousness. “Honestly, I occasionally wonder where I’m like, What technically are the differences between me and a prostitute? But it doesn’t keep me up at night.”
